Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
The contrasting reddish orange, yellow or white, and blue or black coloration makes this species immediately identifiable. Because of this pattern, it is sometimes called the barber-pole grasshopper. The color pattern is variable, but in general the forewings are black with yellow veins, the body is banded with black and yellow, and the dorsal areas of the thorax and abdomen bear spots of orange. Hind femora are black and orange. Hind tibiae are yellow and green. Wings are small. Males are about 24 mm long, females about 32 mm.
