Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
This large, tan or grayish grasshopper is distinctly marked with three broad blackish bands crossing the forewings. Hind wings are pale yellow basally and bear a distinct black band. Antennae are long and black. Hind femora bear a dark band on the outer face; the inner face is bluish black to the base of the femora. Hind tibiae are orange or red. Males are 26-37 mm long, females 36-50 mm.

The three-banded range grasshopper is similar in appearance to the magnificent grasshopper, Hadrotettix magnificus. In the former the basal region of the inner face of the hind femora is blue, whereas in the latter it is brown or orange.
