A dark-colored, late-season species. Body color, including abdomen color, varies from mottled to solid black. Hind wings are bright red-orange with a solid black margin. Hind femora are dark with a light ring distally. Hind tibiae, also blackish in color, bear a light ring near the junction with the femur. Abdomen is dark. Males are 30-41 mm long, females 32-47 mm.
