Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States
Largely gray with black markings. Forewings have large spots or bands, and a black band may be present on the face beneath the antennae. Hind wings are yellow basally with a black band centrally. Wings are long. When the folded wings are viewed from above, a light colored V is evident. Median ridge of the pronotum is elevated near the head but reduced on the posterior half. Hind tibiae are yellowish. Males are 20-27 mm long, females 24-33 mm.

The Apache grasshopper resembles some of the Trachyrhachys species but is distinguished by the reduced median ridge on the posterior region of the pronotum. It can be distinguished from Rehn's slender grasshopper, Hippopedon gracilipes, by the presence of the black band on the hind wing.
