This is a large, heavy-bodied species, and is gray or brown. Pronotum is usually rough or wrinkled, the basis of the name, and often has a light X-shaped mark dorsally, especially in males. Forewings bear large dark spots and light bands; the latter converge at the tips to form a light-colored V dorsally when the wings are closed. Hind wings are usually pale pinkish or orange basally, but sometimes tending toward yellow. They also have a broad dark band centrally but with the tip poorly pigmented. Hind tibiae are yellow. Males are 28-40 mm long, females 39-53 mm.
